A New Tool for Peristomal Skin Complications

Introducing the Peristomal Skin Assessment Guide
As experts in ostomy care, WOC and ET nurses encounter and treat various forms of peristomal skin complications, including peristomal moisture associated skin damage (PMASD) and peristomal medical adhesive related skin injuries (PMARSI). But what happens to patients when the experts are unavailable? If a patient with peristomal skin issues seeks treatment at your facility during your off-hours, do the front-line clinicians know what to do in your absence or does the patient need to return when you are in the clinic?

Recognizing a need to educate the non-WOC/ET nurse on peristomal skin complications and prevent delays in care, the WOCN® Society and Hollister Incorporated worked collaboratively with key expert leaders in the field of ostomy care to create the Peristomal Skin Assessment Guide (PSAG), an innovative online tool for clinicians who treat adult patients with ostomies. The PSAG helps non-expert clinicians standardize assessments, identify complications, and provide interim management options for optimal outcomes in peristomal skin health; it also encourages referral to the WOC/ET nurse when appropriate (i.e., patient follow-up, complex complications, etc.). This free, easy-to-use mobile tool will help to ensure that patients suffering from peristomal skin complications can receive treatment immediately if a WOC/ET nurse is unavailable. Try it now!

The WOCN Society and Hollister launched the PSAG via a symposium at the Society's 49th Annual Conference. A recording of the symposium, presented by Dorothy Doughty, MN, RN, CWOCN, FNP, FAAN, and Laurie McNichol, MSN, RN, CNS, GNP, CWOCN, CWON-AP, FAAN, features information on the development of the PSAG and clinical case scenarios. It will be made available in the coming weeks. Look for more information in upcoming Society communications.
The Peristomal Skin Assessment Guide is supported by an unrestricted grand from Hollister Incorporated.
